Speaking English well is as important as writing it well. Good speakers are not identified by their accent, but by the way they are aware of the subtleties of speech, the intricacies of language, and the quality of their voice.
In this workshop, participants will learn and practice each sound of the English language in the phonetics system. This enables them to find out how words should be pronounced correctly. On top of that, participants will also learn the implications of different speech patterns. They can then identify and improve their own speech patterns to speak more clearly and confidently.
This workshop also discusses another aspect of good spoken English – the implications of what we say, and how this affects our listeners. Are we speaking tactfully enough? Are the words we use suitable for the occasion? Are we speaking too fast, using jargon, or using too much Singlish or other language references? Participants will learn how to avoid these common pitfalls in spoken language, and as a result speak more confidently and professionally.
Workshop Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants will:
- Have an understanding of the speech mechanism, and how we can use this to the best advantage.
- Know the common speech problems that people have, and how to correct them.
- Know the sounds of the phonetics system.
- Know how our speech patterns can affect our message.
